Pap Smears & Treatment for Abnormalities in Chicago, IL

Getting an annual Pap smear is part of our annual well-woman exams at All Women’s Medical Center. A Pap smear (or test) is short for Papanicolaou, which was the last name of a doctor who focused specifically on cervical cells and changes among them that could cause cancer. We generally recommend waiting until you’re 21 to have a Pap smear, unless you’re at a higher risk for sexually transmitted diseases or you have an immune system disorder. Not only do we provide Pap smears, but we also provide treatment for abnormalities for Chicago-area patients. Pap smears are crucial for identifying many female reproductive health issues, including cervical cancer. We also provide a vaccine (Gardasil) which provides protection against nine serotypes of this deadly HPV virus.

What Can I Expect During My Pap Smear?

A Pap smear is part of your pelvic exam and can be completed quickly with minimal patient discomfort. During your Pap smear, we’ll use a thin wand and brush to collect some of your cervix cells. We’ll send these cells off to a lab for analysis, and then give you a call once your results come back (usually within a few days). Your Pap smear may come back normal, indicating your cervix cells are healthy. Your Pap smear may come back as unsatisfactory, which may mean that we didn’t collect a good sample and we need to repeat your test. Your Pap smear could also come back indicating abnormal cells, which could mean that you have a vaginal or cervical infection requiring treatment. Just because your Pap smear comes back with an abnormality doesn’t mean that you have cervical cancer. However, if your Pap smear does indicate cancer cells, we’ll refer you to an oncologist who specializes in cervical cancer.
