Chicago Relies on Us for HPV Diagnosis & Management

Human papillomavirus infection (HPV) is common, and many people aren’t even aware that they have it. A common sexually transmitted infection, HPV is usually harmless. Sometimes HPV goes away by itself without any symptoms, while other times it may include a form of genital warts that may require treatment. Some forms of HPV may lead to cervical cancer among women, and sometimes we may recommend a colposcopy test in addition to your normal Pap smear to analyze your cervix cells for abnormalities. When it comes to HPV diagnosis and management in the Chicago area, you’re not alone. All Women’s Medical Center is by your side to prevent it from having a negative impact on your health.

Treating Genital Warts Caused by HPV

There are at least 100 varieties of HPV discovered thus far, and it can be spread through skin-to-skin contact, including oral, vaginal, and anal sex. In some cases, it can even be transmitted to an infant during birth. Having a higher number of sexual partners, areas of damaged skin, or a weakened immune system can increase your risk for contracting HPV. HPV symptoms may appear at once or even years later, if ever at all. If the type of HPV you’ve been diagnosed with includes genital warts, there are prescription and over-the-counter medications that you can use if they don’t go away on their own without treatment. In rare circumstances, there are also surgical procedures that may be used to freeze or burn the warts away depending upon their size and location. If you have genital warts caused by HPV, it’s imperative that you speak with your doctor to determine the appropriate method of treatment.
